Constructed with flyers, posters, and photographic fragments collected from the streets, the piece becomes an archive of local voices—each torn edge or layered surface a proof of shared presence. The project delves into the ephemeral nature of intimacy and memory within the digital realm. Over the course of a year, as distance dictated the contours of love, images became pivotal tools of communication. Yet, the absence of the beloved within those images echoed constantly. Photographs sent across time zones blurred past and present, turning lived moments into cherished memories while revealing the fragility and vulnerability at the heart of love. The series emerges from a trove of personal photographs from the artist’s archive with a former partner. Through acts of tearing, cutting, and folding, physical traces are inscribed onto the images—marks that testify to presence and absence, proof of existence together yet also of distance apart. These altered fragments are reassembled into collages that hover between clarity and obscurity, where abstraction meets the tangible and the past intertwines with the now. By flattening these collages back into photographs, the work emphasizes their tactile resonance, using surface and texture to symbolize the gulf between the digital facade and the corporeal world. What once functioned as fleeting digital exchanges is reconstituted into objects that bear the weight of loss, fragility, and transformation. This series probes memory and distance, exploring the shifting line between the digital and the actual. It offers a lens through which to consider how love, loss, and longing are experienced in an age where intimacy is mediated through screens. Elephant explores intimacy through the cinematic language of time. In cinema, a second is divided into 24 frames, each carrying fragments of motion and emotion. By translating this structure into photography, the project presents 24 still images to represent a single second — a microscopic study of intimacy, moment by moment. Within the span of a second, what transpires? At its centre is the fragile gesture of a couple’s embrace. When examined second by second, what surfaces are the gaps, slips, and unseen details that often escape perception. Just as we can never fully know the inner world of another person, there are always moments within intimacy that remain elusive — gestures missed, thoughts unspoken, emotions only partially grasped. To amplify this sense of exposure, I process the images in colours reminiscent of X-rays. This visual language echoes the act of examination, as if intimacy itself were being scanned beneath the surface. Yet, like X-rays, the images reveal and conceal at once — they expose form while withholding texture and warmth. In doing so, Elephant reflects on intimacy as both fragile and profound: a space where closeness and distance coexist, and where time itself complicates what it means to understand another. In this project, Albert examine the ephemeral and temporal aspects of photography. Narratives are constructed to amplify the sense of touch, confront the Other and experience the fragility of love. Shaped by successive waves of migration—from the Japanese occupation, to shifting policies before and after the British handover, to the more recent surge of emigration—Hong Kong’s identity has always been in flux. This body of work began with a collection of postcards bought from tourist stalls, each depicting Victoria Harbour’s iconic skyline shimmering against the water. Postcards, however, often offer only an idealized image of a place, unable to capture its deeper spirit. In contrast, the recent waves of departure following the protests have left a silent scar on the city, a profound cultural and emotional shift beneath the postcard surface. In response, I returned to the vantage points where those postcards were first made, re-photographing the city at hourly intervals. This act sought to capture real time as it is lived by locals, reflecting both the city’s rhythms and its fragility. Working across photography and painting, his practice explores themes of memory, intimacy, and social structures. Often drawing from both found photographs and his own archive, Ng employs techniques of tearing, cutting, and bending to create layered collages that evoke rupture, erasure, and the fragile nature of connection. His work is marked by fragmentation and materiality, unfolding as a visual language of longing and brokenness. Ng graduated with a BA in Visual Arts from Hong Kong Baptist University in 2021 and completed an MA in Photography with Distinction at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London, in 2024. His works have been exhibited internationally, including group exhibitions such as Experimental Photo Festival in Barcelona, the International Photography Exhibition 166 at the Saatchi Gallery in London and Obsess and Observe at Uncool Gallery in Brooklyn, New York. He has also shown work in venues across London, including Copeland Gallery, Belsize Community Library, and The Glasgow Gallery of Photography as well as in Hong Kong at the Dimensional Civilization Archeology Exhibition. He has undertaken a residency with Uncool Artist in New York, and his work has been featured in international media including Canto Cutie (US) and Stand News (Hong Kong).
